their knees and confessed their sins察accusing themselves with groanings

and tears察but Hilarius察seized with sudden terror察turned and fled blindly察

without thought of direction察 his eyes wide察 the blood drumming in his

ears察a great horror at his heels ´ a horror that could drive a man from wife

and child察that had driven brave Martin to flee against the wind察and all

this folk to leave house and home to save that which most men count

dearer than either。

     At last察 exhausted and panting察 he stayed to rest察 and saw察 coming

towards him察a blind friar。 Hilarius had turned into a by´way in the hurry

of his terror察 and they two were alone。 The friar was a small察 mean´

looking man察 feeling his way by the aid of hand and staff察 his face

upturned察craving the light。 He stopped when he came up with Hilarius察

and turned his sightless eyes on him察a fire burnt in the dead ashes。

     ;Art thou that son of Christ waiting to guide my steps察 as the Lord

promised me拭─

     Hilarius started back察 afraid at the strange address察 but the friar laid

one lean hand on his arm察 and察 letting the staff slip back against his

shoulder察felt Hilarius' face察not with the light and practised touch of the

blind察but slowly and carefully察frowning the while。

     ;Son察thou wilt come with me拭─

     ;Nay察good Father察I may not察I am for St Alban's。;

     ;Whence察my son拭─

     ;From Westminster察good Father。;

     ;Nay察then察thou mayest spare shoe´leather。 I left the Monastery but

now察and察I warrant thee察they promise small welcome to those from the

pestilent cities。 What would'st thou with the Abbat拭─

     Hilarius told him。

     The friar flung up his hands。

     ;Laus Deo Laus Deo ─he cried察 now I know thou art in very truth

the lad of my dream。 Listen察my son察and I will tell thee all。 Thrice has

the vision come to me察 I see the mother who bore me carried away察

struggling and cursing察by men in black apparel察and Hell is near at hand察

belching out smoke and flame察and many hideous devils察yet the place is

little Bungay察where my mother hath a cot by the river。 When first the

dream came I lay at Mechlin in the Monastery there察my flesh quaked and

my hair stood up by reason of the awfulness of the vision察then as I mused

and prayed I saw in it the call of the Lord察that I might wrestle with Satan

for my mother's soul察for she was ever inclined to evil arts and spells察and

thought little of aught save gain。

     ;Forthwith I suffered no man to stay me察and set off察the Plague at my

heels察but ever out´stripping it察I was careful to preach its coming in every

place察that men might turn and repent。 Then as I tarried on the seaboard

for a ship the Plague came察 and because I had preached its coming察 the

people rose in wrath察and察falling upon me察roughly handled me。 They

beat me full sore in the market´ place察then察piercing my eyeballs察set me

adrift in a small boat。

     ;Two days and two nights I lay at the mercy of the sea察darkness and

light alike to me察and with no thought of time察for the flames of hell burnt

in my eyes察 and a worse anguish in my heart because of my mother's

soul。;

     ;And then察and then拭─tried Hilarius breathlessly察tears of pure pity in

his eyes。

     ;Then the Lord cared for me even as He cared for the Prophet Jonas察

and sent a ship that His message might not be hindered。 The shipmen

were kindly folk察but we were driven out of our course by a great wind察

and at last came ashore in Lincolnshire。 I have come south thus far by

the aid of Christian men察but time presses察and now察lo thou art here to

guide me。;

     ;But察my Father察─said poor Hilarius察seeing yet another barrier in the

way of his desires察 'tis a limner I would be察and I am from Westminster察

not London察and then there is Prior Stephen's letter ´ ;

       The friar held up his hand此

     ;Thou shalt be a limner察my son察the Lord hath revealed it to me。 Last

night the vision came again察and a voice cried此 'Speed察for a son of Christ

waits by the way to guide thy steps' and lo thou art here察waiting by the

way察as the voice said。 And now察son察an thou wilt come thou shalt take

thy letter to Wymondham ´ 'tis a cell of this Abbey ´ for there is Brother

Andreas from overseas who hath wondrous skill with the brush察 he will

teach thee察for thou shalt say to him that Brother Amadeus sent thee察who

is now as Bartimeus察waiting for the light of the Lord察but first thou shalt

set me in that village of Bungay察where my mother dwelleth。;

     Hilarius listened察 gazing awestruck at the withered eyes that vainly

questioned his face。 He had forgotten plague察death察flagellants察in this

absorbing tale of the man of God察 who was even as one of the blessed

martyrs。 Brother Andreas A skilled limner How should he察Hilarius察

gainsay one with a vision from the Lord拭─

     ;I obey察my Father察─he cried joyously察taking the friar's hand察and they

two passed swiftly down the road察their faces to the east。

      CHAPTER V ´ THE WHITE WAY AND WHERE

                                       IT LED

     IT was a bitterly cold night and St Agnes' Eve察the snow fell heavily察

caught into whirling eddies by the keen north wind。 Hilarius and the Friar察

crossing an empty waste of bleak unprotected heath察met the full force of

the blast察 and each moment the snow grew denser察 the darkness more

complete。 They struggled on察 breathless察 beaten察 exhausted and lost察

Hilarius察leading the Friar by one hand察held the other across his bent head

to shield himself from the buffets of the wind。

     Suddenly he stood fast。

     ;I can no more察Father察─he said察 the snow is as a wall察there is naught

to see or to hear察I deem we are far from our right way。; His voice was

very weak察and he caught at the Friar for support。

     ;I will pray the Lord察 my son察 that He open thine eyes察 even as He
