concerned with for the Church of the White Friars。 Later he heard my

story察and when he found I had some small skill with the brush察he kept

me with him察and taught me as only such an one can teach此 him I served

five years。 And many times Satan desired my soul察nay察once I was in

peril of hell´fire察but the Lord was with me察and plucked my feet out of the

pit。   But of that I will speak anon察at my shriving察as is meet。;

The Prior remembered his dream察 but he said no word察 and Hilarius

took up his tale。

;Then one day my master cried there was an end to teaching察

nevertheless he would have me bide with him in honour for the work。 But

my heart was full of longing for home and the scent of the forest察 and察

above all察for thee察my Father察therefore I set my face north察that I might

bring back my gift to St Benedict and our Church察and should have been

here long ere this察but I was let by the way。;

The Prior looked up a little anxiously察 and Hilarius smiled at the

question in his face。

;Tis a lawless tract察 my Father察 under the shadow of the great

mountains beyond Florence察and I was taken by robbers察who bore me and

others of our company to their fastness in the hills此 there I lay in a little

cave many days察 but what befell the rest I know not。 The robbers

brought me forth to serve them察and by God's mercy handled me kindly察

though they thought little of bloodshedding。

;Then one of them was troubled in his spirit察and minded to forsake

this evil manner of life。 Therefore one night he fled察carrying me with

him察 when the others had gone forth察 and we made good our way to

Mantua。 There Pietro察for so was the robber called察left me that he might

give himself to the service of God and men察inasmuch as he had formerly

abused them。 Never saw I man so changed察 my Father察 his speech察

formerly profane察 was all of God and the Saints察 he did penance and

confessed his sins publicly察 ay察 by the Justice's order he received one

hundred lashes in the market´place察 and at every lash he cried with

upturned face察 'Deo Gratias' And I was there察 because he besought of

me to stand in the crowd and pray for him that his courage failed not。

But it came to pass that even the people marvelled at his joyful endurance察

and indeed 'twas more like a scourging of one of the blessed martyrs than

of a poor sinful robber。 After this the Brothers of the Poor took him察for

such was his desire察and so I bade him farewell察and craved his blessing。;

;The Lord fulfil all his mind ─said the Prior with clasped hands。

     ;Amen察─said Hilarius。

;Didst thou not fear to journey further alone察my son拭─

;Nay察my Father察I found for the most part good and kindly men by the

way察 despite their somewhat evil seeming察 but at Genoa I took service

with a merchant then beginning his journey察 and travelled with him

through Flanders察a strange察flat country with many canals and tall poplar

trees察and so we came to Bruges in safety察after a most prosperous course。

There he commended me to a good friend of his察 a wool merchant

travelling to Salisbury察and at first all things went well with us察but later

the winds proved contrary察and we were driven hither and thither in great

peril of our lives察but at last made the Bristol Channel察and so came safe

into port。 Thence I have come hither afoot begging my bread。;

When Hilarius had made an end察the Prior took him in his arms and

blessed him for his dear son察praising God that the lad had come back a

child at heart察but hungering察loving察open´eyed。

Next morning察being shriven察Hilarius ate the bread and drank the wine

of the ;wayfaring man察─his heart merry for the joy of his home´coming。

When the Lady´Mass was ended he knelt on in her Chapel。

;Great Light of Love察 all praise and thanks be thine from thy poor

son察─sang his heart察and then he prayed for his little maid。

CHAPTER IV ´ THE PASSING OF PRIOR

                                    STEPHEN

THE Convent welcomed Hilarius gladly察 and on the Feast of St

Michael he made his profession察for the Prior deemed that he had served

his noviciate and been found faithful察and the Brethren assented eagerly察

for they were fain to keep this wondrous limner for the service of their

own Church。

Then察 by the Prior's command察 Hilarius set himself to limn a great

picture for the High Altar。 It was a Crucifixion察and all his heart and all

his love were in it。 When the Brethren first saw the fair proportion and

fine colours that Hilarius brought to the work察they rejoiced in that their

Church should be glorified above other Churches of the Order察but when

the picture was near completing察and they gazed up into the wondrous face

of the Great King who looked down from the throne of His triumphant

suffering察with a world of hunger and love in His eyes for those who had

so enthroned Him察 they hung their heads for shame because of the

emulation in their hearts察and lo the Cellarer察for very love察was careful

for the needs of the elder Brethren察and the monks察for very love察laid hold

gladly of suffering察and so the Convent was blessed察and lived together in

unity。

In one of the groups very near the Cross察Hilarius set a grey´eyed girl察

a woman with a babe at the breast察 and clinging to her skirts察 a little

flaxen´headed maid。 None but the Prior knew the meaning of these three察

and their names察with that of a poor light´ o'´love察were ever on his lips

when he offered the Holy Sacrifice。

Gentle Brother Hilarius painted and loved察and was beloved of all his

world。 The years sped察and he became in turn Almoner察Novice´ master察

and Sub´Prior此 and no man envied him察for he reckoned himself ever as
