patience yet a little察for he himself would speak to the novices察and with
this Brother Adam must fain be content。
The next day in the Chapter the Prior spoke。
It comes to pass oftentimes that men seeing a sign are made curious by
it察and then forgetting察find the clue thereto察it may be察long after。 Even
thus it happened on this day in the Chapter察and when Prior Hilarius was
gathered to his rest the Brethren remembered how they had marked and
marvelled at the strange beauty of his face察the beauty as of one who sees
the face of the Lord。
;My children察─he cried ´ ;for my children ye are察though I see among
you many it were more fitting I should hail as father察but that the ruling of
the Lord cannot be gainsaid ´ my children察 I am minded to think that I
have this day a message on my lips that is not mine own。
;Last night a vision came to me as I slept。 Blessed Benedict察 our
Father察stood at my side察and his face was troubled。
;'Arise察my son' he cried察'arise察for the Lord is at hand and hath need
of thee。'
;And I察deeming it was of judgment that he spake察sprang up in shame
and fear that the Master should find me sleeping。
;Then cried Blessed Benedict again此
;'If thou wilt serve the Lord察make haste察for He hath called thee these
many times' and so saying passed from my sight。
;Brethren察 I went forth as one bewildered察 and made haste to the
Church lest peradventure I should find Him察but the lamps burnt dim and
all was silent。 Then I turned aside and went out into the night察and it was
very dark察with no sound but the wind in the forest trees。
;My heart was a´hungered察and I sought in cloister and garth察and as I
hasted to the gate I cried aloud察even as she cried who sought Him in a
garden ´ 'They have taken away my Lord。'
;At the gate I stayed me察and besought the Lord for a sign察and lo察in
the darkness one came and led me by the hand away from the gate察across
the garth and up the dormitory stair察nor loosed me until I passed within

where the Brethren lay sleeping察 and the chamber was bright with
exceeding radiance。
;I found myself by the pallet of my dear son Robert此 his face was
wet with tears察and as he lay I saw upon his shoulder the mark of many
stripes。
;Again察 one took my hand and led me from one to another of our
Brethren察and on every face lay the shadow of a great need察but in every
face there was somewhat of the Christ察and the lesson burnt in my heart。
;Then One came swiftly and laid healing hands on the boy Robert察but
I fled察for I might not see Him察and I awoke sore troubled ´ ay察and the
trouble is on me still。
;My Brethren察I can but tell the vision as it came to me。 Great is the
rule of Benedict察our Father察and in it stripes察grievous and many as our
sins察have their rightful place察but mayhap we forget that love察and love
alone察should strike。 Ay察and I mind me how Prior Stephen察my Father察
said that to be monk a man must learn before all things to hunger and to
love。 Love should draw the water and build the fire察 till the field and
attend the sanctuary察and hunger we should cherish in our hearts察hunger
for righteousness and for the souls of our brethren察for this is the hunger of
God。
;Men come over lightly to the Lord's work察 and lo pride and
emulation察 jealousy and discontent察 spring up and thrive察 and the end is
shame and confusion。
;I speak as to my children察it is in my heart that the Lord is at hand此
let us see that we love while there is yet time。;
Then he turned to the novices and stretched out his hands to where
they stood amazed察 and it may be ashamed ´ not after this manner was
Brother Adam wont to rebuke them。
;And ye察who are察as it were察the babes of our Order察give heed to your
ways察neither bring unwilling hands to this service。 Better far go forth察
yea察even to death察than mock the Lord with froward feet and a heart that
is full of vanity。 Remember the sacrifice which Cain offered and the
Lord rejected察for he gainsayed the voice of the Lord and disobeyed His
Commandment察wherefore the wrath of God fell upon him。

;I who speak now察speak in love察give ear to my words察and let fear
befriend you察for the coming of the Lord is as a thief in the night察and lo
stripes bitter and many await that servant whom the Master finds
sleeping。;
Then the Prior察 having made an end of speaking察 raised his hand to
bless察and went forth in silence察and no man stirred in his place察for they
knew that the Lord had spoken and were afraid。

CHAPTER VI ´ THE HUNGER OF DICKON THE
WOODMAN
JUNE was at an end察and men cried aloud for rain。 The hedges were
white察the fields scorched and brown察the leaves fell from the trees as at
autumn's touch察 the fruits scarce formed hung wry and twisted on the
bough察the heavens burnt pitiless察without a cloud。
Dickon察the woodman察sat by the wayside gnawing a crust and a scrap
of mouldy bacon。 There was no sound but the howl of a dog from some
neighbouring farmstead察and he sat in sullen mood察his bill´ hook beside
him察brooding over his wrongs察for the world had gone contrary with him。
His wife was dead察she had died in childbed a month gone察leaving six
hungry察naked brats on his shoulders察and now a worse thing had befallen
him察 his gold was gone ´ his gold to which he had no right察 for 'twas
blood´money察 the food of his children察 ay察 and something beside察 but
Dickon loved that gold piece above all the world ´ above Heaven and his
own soul ´ and it was gone。
A neighbour had surely done it察marked the hiding´place which he had
deemed so safe察 and made off with the prize察 and i' faith 'twas easy
carrying。 There was but one piece察 and Dickon minded how he had
changed his petty hoard to gold scarce a month back at the fair。 Maybe it
was Thomas the charcoal burner had served him t
