prostrate on the ground察kissed the Abbot's sandals。 For they knew already
what the saint had accomplished in Alexandria。 The monks generally
received察by rapid and unknown means察information concerning the safety
or glory of the Church。 News spread through the desert with the rapidity of
the simoon。
When Paphnutius strode across the sand察 his disciples followed him察
praising the Lord。 Flavian察who was the oldest member of the brotherhood察
was suddenly seized with a pious frenzy and began to sing an inspired
hymn
;O blessed day Now is our father restored to us。 He has returned
laden with fresh merits察of which we reap the benefit。 For the virtues of
the father are the wealth of the children察 and the sanctity of the
Abbot illuminates every cell。 Paphnutius察 our father察 has given a new
spouse to Jesus Christ。 By his wondrous art察 he has changed a black
sheep into a white sheep。 And now察behold察he has returned to us察laden
with fresh merits。 Like unto the bee of the Arsinoetid察heavy with the
nectar of flowers。 Even as the ram of Nubia察which could hardly bear
the weight of its abundant wool。 Let us celebrate this day by
mingling oil with our food。;
When they came to the door of the Abbot's cell察they fell on their knees察
and said
;Let our father bless us察 and give each of us a measure of oil to
celebrate his return。;
Paul the Fool察who alone had remained standing察asked察 Who is this
man拭─and did not recognise Paphnutius。 But no one paid any attention to
what he said察as he was known to be devoid of intelligence察though filled

with piety。
The Abbot of Antinoe察locked in his cell察thought
;I have at last regained the haven of my repose and happiness。 I have
returned to my fortress of contentment。 But how is it that this roof of
rushes察so dear to me察does not receive me as a friend察and the walls say
not to me察'Thou art welcome。' Nothing has changed察since my departure察
in this abode I have chosen。 There is my table and my bed。 There is the
mummy's head which has so often inspired me with salutary thoughts察and
there is the book in which I have so often sought conceptions of God。 And
yet nothing that I left is here。 The things appear grievously despoiled of
their customary charm察and it seems to me as though I saw them to´day for
the first time。 When I look at that table and couch察that in former days I
made with my own hands察 that black察dried head察 these rolls of papyrus
filled with the sayings of God察I seem to see the belongings of a dead man。
After having known them all so well察I know them no longer。 Alas since
nothing around me has really changed察it is I who am no longer what I was。
I am another。 I am the dead man What has happened察my God拭What has
been taken from me拭What is left unto me拭And who am I拭─
And it especially perplexed him to find察 in spite of himself察 that his
cell was small察 whereas察 when viewed by the eye of faith察 he ought to
consider it immense察because the infinitude of God began there。
He began to pray察 with his face against the ground察 and felt a little
happier。 He had hardly been an hour in prayer察 when a vision of Thais
passed before his eyes。 He returned thanks to God
;Jesus it is Thou who hast sent her。 I acknowledge in that Thy
wonderful goodness察 Thou wouldst please me察 reassure me and comfort
me by the sight of her whom I have given to Thee。 Thou察presentest her to
my eyes with her smile now disarmed察her grace察now become innocent察
her beauty from which I have extracted the sting。 To please me察my God察
thou showest her to me as I have prepared and purified her for Thy designs察
as one friend pleasantly reminds another of the rich gift he has received
from him。 Therefore I see this woman with delight察being assured that the
vision comes from Thee。 Thou dost not forget that I have given her to
Thee察Jesus。 Keep her察since she pleases Thee察and suffer not her beauty to

give joy to any but Thyself。;
He could not sleep all night察and he saw Thais more distinctly than he
had seen her in the Grotto of Nymphs。 He commended himself察saying
;What I have done察I have done to the glory of God。;
Yet察to his great surprise察his heart was not at ease。 He sighed。
;Why art thou sad察O my soul察and why dost thou trouble me拭─
And his mind was still perturbed。 Thirty days he remained in that
condition of sadness which precedes the sore trials of a solitary monk。 The
image of Thais never left him day or night。 He did not try to banish it察
because he still thought it came from God察and was the image of a saint。
But one morning she visited him in a dream察her hair crowned with violets察
and her very gentleness seemed so formidable察 that he uttered a cry of
fright察 and woke in an icy sweat。 His eyes were still heavy with sleep察
when he felt a moist warm breath on his face。 A little jackal察its two paws
placed on the side of the bed察was panting its stinking breath in his face察
and grinning at him。
Paphnutius was greatly astonished察and it seemed to him as though a
tower had given way under his feet。 And察 in fact察 he had fallen察 for his
self´confidence had gone。 For some time he was incapable of thought and
when he did recover himself察his meditations only increased his perplexity。
;It is one of two things察─he said to himself察 either this vision察like the
preceding ones察 came from God察 and was a good vision察 and it is my
natural perversity which has misrepresented it察 as wine turns sour in a
dirty cup。 I have察by my unworthiness察changed instruction into reproach察
of which this diabolical jackal immediately took advantage。 Or else this
vision came察not from God察but察on the contrary察from the devil察and was
evil。 In that case I should doubt whether the former ones had察as I thought察
a celestial origin。 I am therefore incapable of that discernment which is
necessary for the ascetic。 In either case it is plain that God is no longer
with meof which I feel the effects察though I
