hand a sculptured goblet察as he pledged the merchant kings察and beside
him stood Arete察his wise and lovely queen察and leaned against a pillar as
she spun her golden threads。
Then Alcinous rose察and welcomed them察and bade them sit and eat察
and the servants brought them tables察and bread察and meat察and wine。

But Medeia went on trembling toward Arete the fair queen察and fell
at her knees察and clasped them察and cried察weeping察as she knelt ´
'I am your guest察fair queen察and I entreat you by Zeus察from whom
prayers come。 Do not send me back to my father to die some dreadful
death察 but let me go my way察 and bear my burden。 Have I not had
enough of punishment and shame'
'Who are you察 strange maiden拭 and what is the meaning of your
prayer'
'I am Medeia察daughter of Aietes察and I saw my countrymen here to´
day察and I know that they are come to find me察and take me home to die
some dreadful death。'
Then Arete frowned察and said察'Lead this girl in察my maidens察 and let
the kings decide察not I。'
And Alcinous leapt up from his throne察and cried察'Speak察 strangers察
who are you拭 And who is this maiden'
'We are the heroes of the Minuai' said Jason察 'and this maiden has
spoken truth。 We are the men who took the golden fleece察 the men
whose fame has run round every shore。 We came hither out of the
ocean察after sorrows such as man never saw before。 We went out many察
and come back few察for many a noble comrade have we lost。 So let us
go察as you should let your guests go察in peace察that the world may say察
;Alcinous is a just king。;'
But Alcinous frowned察 and stood deep in thought察 and at last he
spoke ´
'Had not the deed been done which is done察I should have said this
day to myself察 It is an honour to Alcinous察and to his children after him察
that the far´famed Argonauts are his guests。; But these Colchi are my
guests察 as you are察 and for this month they have waited here with all
their fleet察for they have hunted all the seas of Hellas察and could not find
you察and dared neither go farther察nor go home。'
'Let them choose out their champions察and we will fight them察 man
for man。'
'No guests of ours shall fight upon our island察and if you go outside
they will outnumber you。 I will do justice between you察for I know and

do what is right。'
Then he turned to his kings察 and said察'This may stand over till to´
morrow。 To´night we will feast our guests察 and hear the story of all
their wanderings察and how they came hither out of the ocean。'
So Alcinous bade the servants take the heroes in察 and bathe them察
and give them clothes。 And they were glad when they saw the warm
water察for it was long since they had bathed。 And they washed off the
sea´salt from their limbs察 and anointed themselves from head to foot
with oil察and combed out their golden hair。 Then they came back again
into the hall察 while the merchant kings rose up to do them honour。
And each man said to his neighbour察 'No wonder that these men won
fame。 How they stand now like Giants察or Titans察or Immortals come
down from Olympus察though many a winter has worn them察and many a
fearful storm。 What must they have been when they sailed from Iolcos察
in the bloom of their youth察long ago'
Then they went out to the garden察 and the merchant princes said察
'Heroes察run races with us。 Let us see whose feet are nimblest。'
'We cannot race against you察for our limbs are stiff from sea察and we
have lost our two swift comrades察the sons of the north wind。 But do
not think us cowards此 if you wish to try our strength察 we will shoot察
and box察and wrestle察against any men on earth。'
And Alcinous smiled察 and answered察 'I believe you察 gallant guests察
with your long limbs and broad shoulders察 we could never match you
here。 For we care nothing here for boxing察 or for shooting with the
bow察 but for feasts察 and songs察 and harping察 and dancing察 and running
races察to stretch our limbs on shore。'
So they danced there and ran races察the jolly merchant kings察 till the
night fell察and all went in。
And then they ate and drank察 and comforted their weary souls察 till
Alcinous called a herald察and bade him go and fetch the harper。
The herald went out察and fetched the harper察and led him in by the
hand察 and Alcinous cut him a piece of meat察 from the fattest of the
haunch察and sent it to him察and said察'Sing to us察noble harper察and rejoice
the heroes' hearts。'

The Heroes
So the harper played and sang察 while the dancers danced strange
figures察 and after that the tumblers showed their tricks察 till the heroes
laughed again。
Then察 'Tell me察 heroes' asked Alcinous察 'you who have sailed the
ocean round察 and seen the manners of all nations察 have you seen such
dancers as ours here察or heard such music and such singing拭 We hold
ours to be the best on earth。'
'Such dancing we have never seen' said Orpheus察'and your singer is
a happy man察for Phoebus himself must have taught him察or else he is
the son of a Muse察as I am also察and have sung once or twice察though not
so well as he。'
'Sing to us察 then察 noble stranger' said Alcinous察 'and we will give
you precious gifts。'
So Orpheus took his magic harp察and sang t
