you precious gifts。'

So Orpheus took his magic harp察and sang to them a stirring song of

their voyage from Iolcos察 and their dangers察 and how they won the

golden fleece察and of Medeia's love察and how she helped them察and went

with them over land and sea察 and of all their fearful dangers察 from

monsters察and rocks察and storms察 till the heart of Arete was softened察and

all the women wept。 And the merchant kings rose up察each man from

off his golden throne察and clapped their hands察and shouted察'Hail to the

noble Argonauts察who sailed the unknown sea'

Then he went on察and told their journey over the sluggish northern

main察 and through the shoreless outer ocean察 to the fairy island of the

west察and of the Sirens察and Scylla察and Charybdis察and all the wonders

they had seen察 till midnight passed and the day dawned察 but the kings

never thought of sleep。 Each man sat still and listened察 with his chin

upon his hand。

And at last察when Orpheus had ended察they all went thoughtful out察

and the heroes lay down to sleep察 beneath the sounding porch outside察

where Arete had strewn them rugs and carpets察 in the sweet still summer

night。

But Arete pleaded hard with her husband for Medeia察for her heart

was softened。 And she said察'The Gods will punish her察 not we。 After

all察she is our guest and my suppliant察and prayers are the daughters of

Zeus。 And who察 too察 dare part man and wife察 after all they have

endured together'

And Alcinous smiled。 'The minstrel's song has charmed you此 but I

must remember what is right察for songs cannot alter justice察and I must

be faithful to my name。 Alcinous I am called察the man of sturdy sense察

and Alcinous I will be。' But for all that Arete besought him察until she

won him round。

So next morning he sent a herald察 and called the kings into the

square察and said察 'This is a puzzling matter此 remember but one thing。

These Minuai live close by us察and we may meet them often on the seas察

but Aietes lives afar off察 and we have only heard his name。 Which察

then察of the two is it safer to offend ´ the men near us察or the men far

off'

The princes laughed察 and praised his wisdom察 and Alcinous called

the heroes to the square察and the Colchi also察and they came and stood

opposite each other察 but Medeia stayed in the palace。 Then Alcinous

spoke察'Heroes of the Colchi察what is your errand about this lady'

'To carry her home with us察that she may die a shameful death察but if

we return without her察we must die the death she should have died。'

'What say you to this察 Jason the AEolid' said Alcinous察 turning to

the Minuai。

'I say' said the cunning Jason察'that they are come here on a bootless

errand。 Do you think that you can make her follow you察heroes of the

Colchi ´ her察 who knows all spells and charms拭 She will cast away

your ships on quicksands察or call down on you Brimo the wild huntress察

or the chains will fall from off her wrists察 and she will escape in her

dragon´car察 or if not thus察some other way察for she has a thousand plans

and wiles。 And why return home at all察brave heroes察and face the long

seas again察 and the Bosphorus察 and the stormy Euxine察 and double all

your toil拭 There is many a fair land round these coasts察which waits for

gallant men like you。 Better to settle there察 and build a city察 and let

Aietes and Colchis help themselves。'

Then a murmur rose among the Colchi察 and some cried 'He has

spoken well' and some察'We have had enough of roving察we will sail the

seas no more' And the chief said at last察'Be it so察then察a plague she

has been to us察and a plague to the house of her father察and a plague she

will be to you。 Take her察since you are no wiser察and we will sail away

toward the north。'

Then Alcinous gave them food察 and water察 and garments察 and rich

presents of all sorts察and he gave the same to the Minuai察and sent them

all away in peace。

So Jason kept the dark witch´maiden to breed him woe and shame察

and the Colchi went northward into the Adriatic察 and settled察 and built

towns along the shore。

Then the heroes rowed away to the eastward察to reach Hellas察 their

beloved land察 but a storm came down upon them察 and swept them far

away toward the south。 And they rowed till they were spent with

struggling察 through the darkness and the blinding rain察 but where they

were they could not tell察and they gave up all hope of life。 And at last

touched the ground察 and when daylight came waded to the shore察 and

saw nothing round but sand and desolate salt pools察for they had come

to the quicksands of the Syrtis察 and the dreary treeless flats which lie

between Numidia and Cyrene察 on the burning shore of Africa。 And

there they wandered starving for many a weary day察 ere they could

launch their ship again察and gain the open sea。 And there Canthus was

killed察 while he was trying to drive off sheep察 by a stone which a

herdsman threw。

And there too Mopsus died察the seer who knew the voices of all birds察

but he could not foretell his own end察for he was bitten in the foot by a

snake察one of those which sprang from the Gorgon's head when Perseus

carried it across the sands。

At last they rowed away toward the northward察 for many a weary

day察till their water was spent察and their food eaten察 and they were worn
