     Aristaeus shook his head。

;It is very possible that he may cure certain diseases better than I can察

such察for instance察as epilepsy察vulgarly called the divine malady察although

all maladies are equally divine察for they all come from the gods。 But the

cause of this disease lies察partly察in the imagination察and you must confess察

Lucius察that this monk察perched up on the head of a goddess察strikes the

     ;What are they拭─asked Cotta。

     ;Ignorance and folly察─replied Aristaeus。

;I have rarely seen a more curious sight察─continued Cotta察 and I hope

canals。 Farewell察good Paphnutius or rather察till our next meeting If ever

you should come down to earth again察and revisit Alexandria察do not fail to

come and sup with me。;

These words察heard by all present察passed from mouth to mouth察and

being repeated by the believers察 added greatly to the reputation of

Paphnutius。 Pious minds amplified and transformed them察 and it was

stated that Paphnutius察from the top of his pillar察had converted the Prefect

of the Fleet to the faith of the apostles and the Nicaean fathers。 The

believers found a figurative meaning in the last words uttered by Aurelius

Cotta察to them察the supper to which this important personage had invited

the ascetic察was a holy communion察a spiritual repast察a celestial banquet。

The story of this meeting was embroidered with wonderful details察which

those who invented were the first to believe。 It was said that when Cotta察

heaven to wipe the sweat from his brow。 The physician and secretary of

the Prefect of the Fleet had also察 it was asserted察 been converted at the

same time。 And察the miracle being public and notorious察the deacons of the

principal churches of Libya recorded it amongst the authentic facts。 After

that察it could be said察without any exaggeration察that the whole world was

seized with a desire to see Paphnutius察and that察in the West as well as the

East察 all Christians turned their astonished eyes towards him。 The most

celebrated cities of Italy sent deputations to him察and the Roman Caesar察

the divine Constantine who favoured the Christian religion察wrote him a

letter which the legates brought to him with great ceremony。 But one night察

whilst the budding city at his feet slept in the dew察he heard a voice察which

said

;Paphnutius察thou art become celebrated by thy works and powerful by

     Paphnutius replied

     ;God's will be done ─

     The voice continued

;Arise察 Paphnutius察 and go seek in his palace the impious Constans察

before the throne of the Caesars察and thy awe´ inspiring voice shall change

the heart of the son of Constantinus。 Thou shalt reign over a peaceful and

powerful Church。 And察 even as the soul directs the body察 so shall the

Church govern the empire。 Thou shalt be placed above senators察comites察

and patricians。 Thou shalt repress the greed of the people察and check the

the government察will seek the honour of washing thy feet。 At thy death thy

Athanasius察white with glory察shall kiss it as the relic of a saint。 Go ─

     Paphnutius replied
